Is Being Metrosexual Normal Now?

What is a Metrosexual you ask?

First of all, what rock have you been living under? Secondly a metrosexual is a heterosexual male that enjoys partaking in activities that normally a female or a homosexual male would (excluding the sexual stuff). For example: shopping, fashion, skin care etc.

This term came to prominence in 1994, before I was even born. And I feel like I fall into this bracket. I enjoy buying new stuff, I take pride in how I look and I have a skincare routine #FineBoyNoPimple.

A single man with a high disposable income living or working in the city is perhaps the most promising consumer market of the decade – Mark Simpson, 1994

Now, I don’t have a high disposable income yet but this was 1994, products are much easier to come by today and can be brought literally anywhere.

What I’m thinking now is, has it become more of a norm among black men throughout the years than it was in 1994?

I grew up in south east London, the youngest of 4 children and the only boy. I grew up around women, exposed to different things. From face masks to body salts and everything in-between. I guess that’s the reason behind my urge to want to look good and the interest I have in personal hygiene routines.

More men are becoming less embarrassed to admit to looking after themselves and taking an interest into fashion. Guys are getting pedicures and manicures, following fashion changes and developments just as much as women do nowadays.

Before all this, give a guy a bar of soap and some deodorant and he’s happy. But in 2018, the variation of skin and hair care products that are available for men are amazing. It’s just as vast as the women’s. Getting ready for a night out would have taken 10-15 minutes for the average man before 1994. Today I’d say it takes me and probably every other metrosexual close to 40 – 60 minutes. This is down to the creams and lotions that are available.

I found out recently that men only washed their balls, ass and armpits while in the shower. I don’t know if that’s true but the diagram was hilarious. Anyway, it was no surprise that a shower took 5-8 minutes if that’s all they were scrubbing.

You’ll usually start caring about your appearance once you hit adolescence. That’s when pimples start appearing. Your body is constantly changing and that’s when most metrosexual men are born. During their teenage years. Some guys still don’t see getting a pedicure or manicure or being conscientious of personal hygiene in general as “masculine”. But that’s why they have dragon claws. Their feet and hands look like something out of Game of Thrones.

It’s a Man’s World. I’ve seen the future of masculinity and it’s moisturised. – Mark Simpson, GQ exhibition, 1994

Coconut Oil or Cocoa Butter was the default moisturiser for black men in the past and still is in some respect. But new lotions have come into the mix and have drew the attention of many a men to try something new.

Even the management of beards, with shampoo, conditioners and oils. It’s all falls under the characteristics of a metrosexual man. You’re taking time out of your day to groom yourself.

At the end of the day: Take care of your body and it will take care of you.

Rekindled My Love of Reading.

*SIGH*

It has been a WHILE since I last posted anything on here and I apologise. More so, to myself than to anyone else. Because I swore that I wouldn’t fall off, in the sense of consistently putting out content. However, from the looks of things at the moment, that is exactly what is happening.

The first thing that people will assume is that I’m probably going through something tough in my life… NOPE. I’ve never felt more content or happy than I currently do. If I’m being honest, I’ve just been preoccupied with something else… and that something else is READING.

Not many people know, but I use to love to bury my nose in a novel when I was growing up. A mini escape from the real world. A place where my imagination could run riot. I was a book worm, 100%. Many factors took me away from this infatuation: Puberty, Girls, Peer Pressure, Insecurity etc.

I just stopped reading one day and it became extremely hard for me to pick up a book and really enjoy it after that. However, recently I feel like I’ve broken through that barrier and rekindled my love for novels and reading as a whole. It couldn’t have come at a better time too. With too much social media and constantly comparing myself with others on social media. Plus the excessive use Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat.

It got to the point where I would wake up in the morning, and the first thing I’d do is go through those social platforms. Like say I had notifications to check. I HAD NONE. I did this religiously.

Social media is an incredible creation and if used right, can make you a shitload of money. But too much of it is toxic, especially if you start to compare yourself to others.

People will say they don’t do such, but if you’re using it in excess, the way I was. Subconsciously you will. There’s no doubt about it. And that just plants seeds of self doubt, insecurity and feelings of unnecessary envy towards others online.

Reading has been that alternative I go to whenever I have the urge to jump on social media and “scroll”. Especially now it’s the summer holidays and I have a considerable about of free time on my hands. Gym has played a part too but reading is the key factor here. I learn new words everyday, my vocabulary has improved a lot. It feels good, can’t even lie to you.

Even the matter of girls, I use be so eager to interact with the opposite sex, mainly because my friends were so vocal about it. Group-chats would be popping with stories, which of course won’t be shared. But I’m sure you get the drift. In a way it’s like a kind of peer-pressure, I didn’t want to be left out. So I’d often than not, “force” conversations with a handful of girls. Jumping into DM’s I had no business being in and then wondered why the talks wouldn’t progress forward into something significant. More than half of these girls were strangers and I wasn’t planning on meeting them. Even if I said I was.

Shoutout to the guys that can juggle multiple girls at a time because I tried it and failed LOL. I’m not about that life at all man. I find it a challenge to even chase one girl, I’m too lazy and it’s something I seriously sit down and think about because does that make me a melt or… I don’t know.

I’m such an introvert it hurts, I enjoy my bedroom so much. Social settings aren’t my thing at all, unless it’s with close friends and/or family. All the parties I’ve gone to have been forced on my part. I didn’t really want to go. The mandem will probably read this and be shocked… or maybe they won’t. They’ll let me know when they see it.

But anyway, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m not a very social person and I’m cool with that, small talk is not my strong point and I’m not afraid of silence so that makes me socially awkward I guess. I could say it’s because of my stutter but I’ve out grown the anxiety that it use to give me. And I like to be vocal about it nowadays so it’s never on my mind as much anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a creep that will stare at you at a function and not say a word. I will speak and make conversation if I’m spoken to. I’m a grown man c’mon.

I’ve just given up on forcing the whole “outgoing” persona. It’s tiring and it was taking a toll on me, foreal.

Anyway, this a little too deep. Let’s liven things up! Tion Wayne is fresh home & cooking up some summer bangers, the SUN has been cooking us in the UK for a good month & a bit and POWER is back on TV. I’m happy af at the moment.

Time to jump back on my blogging business because I’m serious about it.

God Bless.

YouTube Kicking Drill to the Curb?

Damn, you’re really going to do the mandem like that YouTube?

It has come to my attention that YouTube has taken down a handful of music videos under the “Drill” genre. As a result of police complaints, stating that it is causing the recent issue of increased crime in London.

Seems unfair that this is what is being done, victims of the forceful deletion have taken up appeals to have their videos put back up on the website. But if I’m being honest, I really don’t know how I feel about this… On one hand, it’s naive to believe that music is the main cause of the increased crime and deaths in the capital. But then, on the other hand, youths are easily influenced and there are a lot of  “gassed” (unnecessarily confident/cocky) youths walking around today, wanting to “prove a point” and the music seems to have fueled the desire to do so.

Everyone wants to be Al Capone nowadays, but I don’t see movies like “Scarface” or the Netflix hit series “Narcos” being targeted. Why is that?

Personally,  I don’t care for Drill. I don’t find it stimulating at all. However, there are people that listen to this genre without having malicious thoughts or being urged to break the law. Is it fair to deprive those people of the music because of those that aren’t acting accordingly?

The government need to think of ways to keep youths busy. Youth clubs, after-school clubs were instrumental when I was a kid because it gave me something to do outside of school. So I wasn’t just walking about on the street with nothing to do. A popular verse in the Bible: “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop” has never made so much sense to me before now.  How many youth clubs/extra-curricular activity centres have been closed down due to cuts that the government have made? Where has the money been going instead? You can’t say tax because have you seen the roads lately? Pothole galore, sometimes I feel like I’m back in Nigeria with the way the car gallops in and out of worn out tarmac.

To be honest, I don’t think crime rates have risen at all. I genuinely believe that the media have just decided to give it more coverage than they usually do. At the end of the day London has never been a completely safe place and that is a fact. Like any other city in the world. But it is clear that people want to make this genre of music the scapegoat for what is happening at the moment. Similar to how a lot of people we against Hip-Hop in the late 80’s and early 90’s because of its “glamorisation of violence and drugs“.

Then again, some of the lyrics that people are coming out with are ridiculous, I have heard things like “stabbing man in the chest and licking the blood off”. I’m sure you can tell that I’m paraphrasing, but it was along those lines. With shit like that on the internet, you can’t be surprised at the outcome.

The youth are literally the future, so we need to put more effort and thought into their development. Because at the moment, a lot of them are little shits with no sense of discipline. It will only get worse if something isn’t done and done fast.

God Bless.

False Accusations?

As of late, people have felt that little bit more encouraged to come out about harassment/rape. That is a good thing, these are things I, personally don’t condone. Along with 99% of the population.

However, there have also been a plethora of false cases here and there that have been brought to respective authorities out of spite or other malicious reasons.

In terms of valid cases, the most recent and memorable was the case against Bill Cosby. The 80-year old has been convicted of many counts of sexual assault and looks to spend the rest of his life behind bars. I just “googled” the guy to find out his age and it looks like Wikipedia haven’t wasted time in updating their description of the guy. “Sex offender” is there for all to see.

I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve to be shamed, I have no doubt that he’s guilty but it is just upsetting how easy it is for a decorated career, such as his to be tarnished forever. I never found Bill funny but other people did and I’m sure his incarceration will upset that particular group.

Moreover, Morgan Freeman has recently been accused of similar acts and I just refuse to believe it. I need some solid proof, it’s starting to seem like all the distinguished black celebrities are being targeted.

Jimmy Saville was out here touching kids for God knows how long, “supposedly” unknown to everyone. Isn’t it convenient how when he was finally outed for his crimes the guy was already 6-feet under? Like c’mon… you’re telling me NO ONE knew about the shenanigans he was getting up to? Qwhite strange.

That is a load of cow poo if you ask me.

I bet you guys haven’t heard of Jeffrey Epstein, a banker/financier and convicted sex offender. This guy has a whole island where he has kidnapped kids and uses them as prostitutes for all the twisted paedophiles of the world. Don’t believe me? GOOGLE it.

I don’t want to play the race card, but a man of colour could never DREAM of getting away with shit like this the way Jeffrey is. Bill Clinton has been rumoured to have visited this so-called island, as Jeffrey and the Clintons are good friends. What really amazes me is that this guy hasn’t been confronted.

What kind of connections does he have? It’s scary to think about…

I’ll stop while I’m ahead.

In conclusion, we shouldn’t throw people like Morgan Freeman to the wolves just yet. Because false accusations have been thrown around a lot. For media attention or just because someone wants to be a real asshole and mess with someone’s life.

So slow your roll coach, let’s wait and see how this case unfolds.

God Bless.

Fame: A Path Leading to Insanity?

Fame, to be famous…

Society does an extremely effective job in making it look all glitz and glam on TV and via the internet. But; behind the whole “La Vida Loca” lifestyle, celebrities are suffering from drug addiction & abuse to a variety of mental illnesses.

I feel like this is always the end game to fame, excluding a handful of individuals that haven’t allowed the beast we call fame to consume them and leave just a shell of what they once were behind. The ones that weren’t so lucky however are in the hundreds, a number that just keeps on increasing. The thought of constantly being in the public gaze, being under constant scrutiny. This will gradually weigh down even the strongest person, the stifling feeling of not being able to be yourself anymore because of what people may think or because of the image you have to uphold to the public.

Before you begin to scream “You shouldn’t care what others think”, we have to take into consideration that a celebrity is nowhere near as effective without their following. So to quickly disregard the thoughts and feelings of the said following, will be detrimental to the career they worked so hard to establish.

Child stars are the most vulnerable in cases like this. Children will always look for validation from people around them, so being around the wrong people will seriously damage their development. A perfect example of this is the majority of Disney stars that starting acting from a young age. Raven Symone, Orlando Brown, Miley Cyrus, Lindsey Lohan etc.

What do these celebs have in common?

They were all young stars that experienced breakdowns, both mentally and physically due to being constantly in the spotlight. They turned to drugs for comfort. (Orlando and Lindsey more so than the others). When I say drugs I don’t mean your common spliff of weed. I’m talking about Heroin, Cocaine, Pills etc

My point is that parents are so keen to enrol their kids to be young celebrities nowadays they forget they need to also have a constant and stern presence in their child’s life to keep them afloat and avoid the “downward spiral” that we have seen so many times before. That is the difference between the kids that have gone through young stardom and come out fine, in contrast to the ones that are now washed up addicts… the actions of the parents/carers.

With fame, making a mistake is the be all or end all. And for a celebrity, knowing that can mess with your head on another level, thus causing outbursts of erratic behaviour.

I just COULDN’T talk about erratic behaviour without mentioning Kanye West…

giphy

His recent comments on Twitter regarding his support of current POTUS Donald Trump have caused an uproar amongst black people. But the majority of the anger/disapproval is directed towards Kanye saying that “slavery was an option“. As well as the musician comparing himself to slavery revolutionists such as Harriet Tubman.

Many believe that it is all a ruse to gain promotion for his upcoming album. I accept that this method has been used before by other musicians but I believe that Kanye really is in the “sunken place”. He just hasn’t seemed right ever since the death of his mother, something he blames himself for.

Being affiliated with the Kardashians doesn’t exactly help either, anyone that comes into close contact with that family seems to go insane one way or another. Also with fame having the same effect on people as a drug, it could also be a way of catching everyone’s attention. Which only gives the whole album promotion argument even more plausible.

In conclusion, I wouldn’t particularly want to be famous. Just successful. Because once you’re famous, people will pray and plot on your downfall. So personally, I would rather live my life privately and comfortably.

God Bless.

London… WTF is Going On?

So, London’s murder rate has overtaken that of New York

DEEP it, the capital of the UK has overtaken an American city in terms of homicide cases. No shade but this is the same country that has had multiple school shootings in the past couple of months alongside other crazy events occurring left, right and centre.

I’m pretty shocked… have things become worse or are the media just giving this issue more coverage than usual?

So far in 2018, 46 people have been fatally stabbed in the capital. Compared to 50 in the Big Apple. Although it’s blatantly more, New York’s rate is decreasing month on month while London’s is continuing to increase.

It’s mainly knife crime as well. The amount of hatred required to stick some steel into someone is immense. So seeing so many stabbings is difficult for me to comprehend.

What exactly is the reason for all this: Drugs/Money? Pride? Repping your postcode?

The latter is the most shameful of the trio. Big men fighting over an area that doesn’t even belong to them. The council aren’t paying you for the so-called “protection” you believe you’re providing. Half of the time, the perpetrators don’t even know the victims they attack. “How you beefing man if you don’t even know the man“.

Word to Santandave.

People can be extremely juvenile, incapable of using words instead of violence when faced with confrontation or issues. Behaving like you’re still wearing Huggies & sucking on your mother’s titty.

The majority of victims have been black too. THE GOVERNMENT (Oyinbo’s) ARE LOW-KEY LAUGHING AT US!

Why does black on black crime still exist? After ALL the crap, we as a race have been through throughout history? You’d think it would have brought us closer together but damn…

In March 2018, 22 murders were investigated in London and I’m pretty sure that’s a tip of the iceberg because you know how the government don’t always tell us the whole truth.

Apparently, the government have launched a £1.35M series of adverts to run across various social media platforms. The adverts will feature the stories of teenagers that have been stabbed or have been affected by knife crime. They are doing this with the hope of deterring 10 – 21-year-olds from knife crime.

The fact that the adverts are even directed to youths as young as 10 is a fuckery in itself.

Biggest Man Ting… to all the people on the roads, come off it. It’s not worth it, there are two paths on the road you’re venturing and that is either DEATH or PRISON. Pursue your dream, whatever it may be. I’m pretty sure that there hasn’t been a kid in history that has dreamed of being a “roadman“.  So, what’s that thing you’ve always wanted to do? What puts a pep in your step? It’s never too late to fix up and start behaving like a civilised human being.

Just a little something for you guys to think about…

God Bless

Stammering & M…M…Music

What’s with a stammer/stutter magically disappearing when you’re singing along to a favourite song?

As you guys know, I have a stutter. I’ve been living with it for 17 years and counting. The thing that has always amazed me about my stutter was how it would temporarily disappear whenever I was reciting pieces of music or singing along to a favourite song of mine.

It was the one thing that really baffled me. Over the years, through experience and research. I have come to understand why this is the case. It’s mainly down to “easy onset of speech”. As human beings, we tend to use a much more smooth or gentle voice when we sing, compared to when we talk.

This goes hand in hand with the main issue with people that stutter, the inability to calm down, take their time and not rush their speech. Think about it, when you’re singing a song. You know what words are coming next and you know no one is going to rush you. The whole thing is set out before you’ve even opened your mouth.

The same rules apply when speaking: Think about what you want to say before you open your mouth, know when to take a break to breathe and don’t rush into anything, you gotta go with the melody (in this case the melody in your head). Breathing, as well as making full use of your diaphragm is key.

This is what speech therapists, over the years have added to their therapy exercises. Music has been a common avenue to use when trying to help people control their stammer. Many stammerers have gone on to make music. The most popular for me is  Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates. His stammer was severe but he still made it so far into a competition that involved you opening your mouth and talking. Something stammerers are absolutely terrified of.

If I could sing/rap, I would be pursuing a career in music too… joking… I think.

In conclusion, music is such a beautiful thing and the tools needed to thrive in the industry are very similar to what an individual needs to be able to control their stammer effectively.

So I say continue using music as a means of speech therapy because I first-hand, know how effective it is.

God Bless.
